Meditation's not about becoming an emotional zombie. Rather, it's an opportunity to 1) root out unwanted feelings and habits, 2) water the seeds of good habits and feelings, and 3) establish and maintain the ability to have awareness of choices, and choose wisely, rather than feel overwhelmed, or react unthinkingly.
From Understanding Buddhism by Gary Gach
This excerpt says it so succinctly that I thought I would start there ... if in the first sentence we replace meditation with self-hypnosis, the above excerpt gives you an understanding of the service we offer and what we teach you to do for yourself ... for the rest of your life ... hi, i'm devon bell and I have been practicing meditation since the TM (Transcendental Meditation) movement of the early 70's when so many Americans were introduced to meditation ... and caught a peek at an Eastern philosophy ... or perhaps a new way of looking at this shared existence, here and now ... I am continuously reminded that it's the effort that gets it all going ... once you begin, Self-Hypnosis/meditation is cumulative and glimpses of the connection to The Divine come more often.
In ways both measurable and experiential, meditation and self-hypnosis are very similar, and in some cases identical ... at least as identical as a completely subjective experience can be ... the brain waves move from beta (our waking, walking around state) into the alpha and slower ranges ... and one feels variously heavy or light and 'floaty'; extreme relaxation and calm; sounds become distant; time distorts, etc ... we've all had these experiences in the form of becoming immersed in a great book or laughing or weeping at a movie ... or just plain daydreaming (spacing-out) and the all-too-familiar road-hypnosis ( where did that last 10 miles go?) ... these are all varying degrees of self-hypnosis ... sound familiar? ... probably so since just about everyone enters this natural, altered state regularly ... from a physiological perspective this is really good for you ... your body moves into the rest/digest response and the Healer Within begins the perfect work of healing and balancing the body-mind-spirit ... your immune system has an opportunity to respond effectively to the endless challenges our bodies deal with daily ... take some time to repair the negative effects chronic stress ... wow!, I mean why not do this for yourself? ... please believe me when i tell you "you are worth it" ... learn how and give yourself the gift of 30-days putting in the effort ... yes, there's that word again ... we can be of true service to you but we can't make the effort for you ... only with you.
